Those shipwright apprentices who started in January 1951 would have expected to complete their training in January 1956. As can be seen from the above, this apprentice completed his training several months later on 13th August 1956. In September 1955 he went to Newcastle upon Tyne to read Naval Architecture at Kings College, University of Durham. During vacations he returned to Portsmouth Dockyard Drawing Office to complete the remainder of his apprenticeship. It may be of interest to know, that the final university examinations included a written English translation from a French or German technical paper on a shipbuilding subject.
